Slim for Richard Gotainer

French motion director Slim (a.k.a. Aniss Slimane) poured a heaping helping of color and sunshine into this whimsical music video for 80s pop star Richard Gotainer. As silly and free-spirited as the illustrations are, there are some quite beautiful compositions throughout, giving the piece as unexpected dash of slickness that I like.

I won’t comment on the music or Mr. Gotainer’s performance except to say that I find them both wildly entertaining. Apparently, Mr. Gotainer wrote the song to promote the joys of vacationing in the Champagne region of France. Based on this video, it looks like maybe Mr. Gotainer didn’t quite have enough to time to shoot on location. Ah well, c’est la vie. A green screen and some CG can do in a pinch.

Did anyone else notice the particles abruptly end about 5 frames early in the shot where he is laying down?

I really enjoyed the overall tone of this, particularly the wacky singing (with some nice editing bringing it together) but the animation just stuck out like a sore thumb, really distracting for me.

I don’t mean to pick on this in particular, its a problem I’ve seen a lot, but whatever happened to character animation? Like, you know, animation, not puppetry, which is what this is. For this piece there is no question it should have been fully animated (ie multiple images simulating movement). Right now the characters rigid, not full of the exuberant life of the music. Take away their bright colors and bubbly eyes and the motion is cold and mechanical.

Sorry to rant, but I had to get it off my chest, especially after being blown away by Birdo.
