Egmont Mayer: Red Rabbit

We all have something we want to hide. Bad breath. A shadowy past. A massive rabbit living in the spare bedroom.

Created as a graduation film for his time at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Egmont Mayer’s “Red Rabbit” tells the story of a man and his attempts to keep his gigantic pet rabbit a secret from a tenant in his apartment building. It’s a touching short film with a carefully metered pace befitting the otherwise routine lives of its lead human characters.

The lighting and rendering are wonderfully diffuse, creating a gauzy, dreamlike ambiance that softens the film’s dead-pan surreality.

Egmont is now working as a freelance animation director and also part of the Berlin post-production and animation company Shape Minds and Moving Images.
