Plenty take a “Time Out” for AXN LatinAmerica

With a gorgeous visual style, amazing transitions and some old school frame by frame animation, Argentina-based Plenty delivers a visually stunning piece for AXN LatinAmerica.

This is what Mariano Farias & Pablo Alfieri from Plenty had to say about the project:

We started out by defining what the piece was about, AXN wanted to show a person’s journey when getting ready to watch movies back to back. We started out by choosing what these actions would be and we then arranged them in a way to make the flow of the transitions work from one scene to the next.

We wanted this piece to have a completely different look from anything else we’ve done in the past. And after several rounds of creative, we landed on high contrast 2D look with a minimal color palette.

Finding ways to have the whole team working at once on a project that relies in its entirely on seamless transitions was tricky, given that the scenes couldn’t be separated in the same way as a motion piece. Understanding what the rest of the team was working on was even more important than usual with this project. That said, probably the trickiest thing we had to deal with was achieving and maintaining a balance between the 3D animation and the hand-drawn elements throughout.

This is probably the most old-school project we’ve done. It was all done in 3ds Max, After Effects with absolutely no plugins. Most of the animation was done using masks and a lot of keyframes!
