Liars Need Good Memory

In “Liars Need Good Memory,” Ringling College of Art and Design student James Heredia creates a visual poem about identity, belonging and lying. The collaged animation and mixed media approach resonate with the film’s main theme: that through piecing together bits of material, some found, some fabricated, we can fashion a persona.

Heredia’s thinking behind the project:

I’ve had a hard time trying to fit in with the right crowd so the notion of crafting an image to appease to the right audience was always a reoccurring theme. I wrote a paper in college about the idea of how we benefit from lying. I defended lying as positive, intrinsic form of creativity. Growing up I used it as a tool of confidence, to make life a bit more interesting and special. I lied to maintain a sense of harmony, I had to catalog my lies and begin to keep track of what and who I said them to. Liars need good memory.
