Watching Glean Keane draw in virtual reality is amazing

Legendary animator Glen Keane is famous for his work on Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas. Despite his notoriety as a traditional animator earned by spending thousands of hours wielding a pencil, he’s not afraid of bleeding edge tech, either.

This video created for the Future of Storytelling conference shows Mr. Keane drawing in 3D space, with VR goggles strapped to his face and both hands holding controllers.

From the release:

Instead of a paper and pencil, Keane draws life-sized versions of Ariel and Beast in the short with an HTC Vive headset and the 3D painting app called Tilt Brush, (which is now owned by Google). Rather than just being static on a page, he’s able to walk around his characters as if they were fully three-dimensional.

Given his comfort level with the setup, Mr. Keane has clearly logged some time with the system.

Tilt Brush

Tilt Brush looks pretty interesting on its own. With backing from Google, hopefully they’ll get it to market soon.
