Salon Alpin’s latest work for Austrian newspaper Falter takes viewers on a journey through eight levels of hell, each scene rendered in a painterly black and white style that deserves repeat viewing.
Although it’s tempting to assume the video is illustrating the nine circles of hell from Dante’s Inferno, the scenes don’t quite line up. This vision of hell is more modern, featuring fascist dictatorships, smartphone jails, factory farms and other twisted takes on contemporary life.
The closing line, “Hol mich hier raus,” translates loosely to “Get me out of here.” Juxtaposed with the endtag, the message is powerful: reading Falter provides you with the only escape from the madness — knowledge.
