Showcase: Weird by Fausto Montanari

Today we’re happy to showcase the new film, Weird by Fausto Montanari produced at Lobster

Synopsis

“Weird” is a monologue about the diversity. It’s a scream of a girl, used to be judged as a weirdo and different. In the film, she gives voice to her sufferance, and she expresses the dream to delete the concept of weirdness. She thinks that weirdness is nothing more than a personal perspective.

From Fausto

I was in Brooklyn when I wrote the first idea for the short. At that time, I was traveling a lot. I met a lot of people from different places and subcultures and from that moment I started to think about the different lifestyles and needs. I also started to observe different realities, some that were genuinely inclusive and others that had a tendancy to be more discriminatory.

The short is based on an elementary question, with a not so obvious reply: What is weird and who gets to decide what is considered strange?

In the end, weirdness is only a point of view that changes based on different social conventions. This film is a consequence of that thought and expresses my need to explore the question above and in a way, to start a discussion about equality.

I’m proud of the results and that it has been well recieved in many film festivals and has even become the voice of different minoritys at these events.

The full production took around four months to make, but since it’s an indie project, was done in parallel with many other commercial projects.

This is the second short I have directed, and the first one which is almost fully animated traditionally. It was also the first big project I directed with a team at Lobster, and has helped us to expand our collaboration and studio efforts.
