Nokia Style Guide

Taking illustrations from James Taylor as their starting point, James “Mutanthands” Wignall and co-animator Mark Warrington built a little Pied Piper narrative for agency fivefootsix, who approached Mainframe needing an animation style guide for Nokia.

Taylor’s illustrations are full of character on their own, but in the hands of Wignall and Warrington, they spring pleasantly to life. I’ll be curious to see how Nokia uses this project. It could be the start of an interesting new direction for them.

What exactly is an animation styleguide???

mutanthands

thanks for the comments gang!

Clucky – Good question, it baffled us a little too. I think it’s more to do with atmosphere, feel good factor, pace and a sense of community that they want to get across with their future animations, rather than a visual style i guess. Hope that makes sense!

Clucky

so this means future animations will not necessarily feature these illustrations?
and was the brief a little vague at first and if it was, how did things get clarified as things progressed?

Not sure I understand the ‘sense of community’…
it’s a neat piece, regardless…

Nice work James, may I ask how you did the walk cycle? Is it a bunch of 2d drawing? Or some kind of distort in AE- it looks fab!

Hiya Pete,

The walk cycle was a bunch of 2d drawings. Looked into ae distortion and hinged limbs, but it wouldnt give the right kind of animation style!

Cool- fair play!
