Motionographer makes a distinction between speculative work contests and showcase contests.
Speculative Work Contests
For speculative work contests, contestants are asked to create an original project for the purposes of the contest. This work is often used for promotional purposes later. As a general rule, we do not endorse initiatives that ask professionals to create this type of work.
Showcase Contests or Industry Award Competitions
For showcase contests, contestants submit work that’s already been completed (presumably for a paying client or self-initiated) in the hopes that it will win industry attention. Examples include the D&AD Awards, Adobe Design Achievement Awards and First Boards Awards.
