More cinematic animation, glows and grain from Colin Hesterly

“Spark of Science” is the latest feather in the cap of director Colin Hesterly’s expansive career.

We all remember when “World Of Motion,” a personal favorite of mine, came out in 2010 and inspired us with its continuous camera movement and those bold, graphic landscapes. World of Motion is merely one of the many top-notch shorts films and commercial pieces that Colin has directed over the years. His latest film is no different…

“Spark of Science,” produced through Not to Scale, is an elegant visual narrative that tells the story of astrophysicist France A. Cordova, as part of a series of films commissioned by science magazine Nautilus.

France’s own voice was captured here as she describes her early professional years. The rich voice-over is then complimented by Colin’s unique eye for design which pairs perfectly with her sense of wonder and passion for science. Given Colin’s distinct voice and love of whimsy, I can’t imagine a better director for this film.

The story is built around a beautiful atmosphere which employs a restricted purple palette, a sense of light and just the right amount of depth. The careful use of parallax, long shots and effortless transitions make for a overtly cinematic and natural animation.
