Nando Costa’s new venture, Nervo, has been busy. Nando is one of those pioneering souls who long ago established himself as a distinctive voice. In a field dominated by chameleons, Nando’s vibrant palettes and playful concepts consistently set him apart. It looks like Nervo is continuing in that tradition, and that makes me happy.

Nice I like the fox id’s. Seem a little inspired by marcelo https://dev.motionographer.com/2007/01/21/marcelo-garcia-ix-virtuosi/
IMHO the other new stuff is not very impressive, the absolut is basically graphics he did many years ago and the M$ packaging is, uhm, mmkay.
There’s this brazilian syndrome with nando as well, where i struggle with separating him from others like marcelo garcia, falkenbach, cisma..
They all are doing cool stuff with marcelo being my favorite.

Good luck with the studio Nando. Always have looked forward to seeing any new projects you are involved with.

I see no problems with different designers experimenting with similar visual threads. Novelty isn’t always necessary.

Keep bringing the goods.

Looks great to me. It’s cool to watch a new studio take off. FOX ids are familiar feeling here and there, but are so nice I don’t care.
I agree with jdretz. Novelty is just that, and cool work is just that.

i appreciate the comments regarding a similarity between nando’s fox ids and this piece i did many many months ago. i dont think there is much of a connection however. i like nando’s ids much better too… :)
this thing about designers from brazil designing similarly to one another is very interesting and should be open to discussion in lectures and things. there is an obvious difference in the way things are conceived, look, and feel in each differente continent however. i have heard similar things being said about sports graphics in the u.s. (since we mentioned fox) or about music graphics in the u.k. i think its a matter of give and take. one can not deny the influence nando has had in motion design as a whole. i think the site is really cool and i am sure motion designers have missed nando’s visual inputs as much as i have. best wishes to the new studio!

Hello. I’m glad the Nervo site has been well received. I’m very appreciative of the feedback. It’s always hard to get a website up, but it had to come out at some point.

I personally think that Marcelo’s work on “Virtuosi” was really great! Congratulations on that Marcelo! I was pretty interested into it when it came out. But I have a hard time seeing any association between that piece and Fox. Not that there would be anything wrong with it. Good work, inspires right?! But when it comes to FOX, I think one of my more obvious references would have been Donald Judd for some of the pieces and a few young photographers I got to know after moving to Portland.

But you guys are right. It’s really difficult to come up with work that does not relate to some other visual reference of some sort. Whether it’s your own or someone else’s, there are always other sources of influence. But I’ve realized that no matter how much I love illustrating / designing / animating, and admit to be a workaholic, at the end of the day it’s just work and it does not need to be much more pretentious than that. There are more important things to worry about right? :)

As far as the subject of Brazilian artists and their synchronized “attack”, I think it’s just a matter of interpretation. A color palette or techniques aren’t always indicative of citizenship. There are a lot of really amazing artists out there and some of the work may sometimes appear heavily influenced but in the end, everyone adds their own taste to their work and that’s what makes each one unique.

And many thanks for the post Justin! I was really surprised this morning, thought only 3 people had seen the site. :)
