Futurama 3D

Updated with new making of video

Futurama fan and 3D artist Alexey Zakharov took it upon himself to recreate the world of the beloved sci-fi show in gloriously detailed CG.

Q&A with Alexey Zakharov

Did you create this just for fun? Or was it a work assignment?

Yes, it’s just fan art. I made it in my free time.

Is this part of a larger project that you’re working on?
I hope it’s not the end of the project but just beginning. I made so much stuff for this, but the main problem is time. I don’t have enough time to do such a huge project.

How long did it take you to make this?
Its hard to calculate. It was not nonstop production, and I did it at my free time. And there are so much stuff: architecture, city structures, vehicles, characters, animation advertising, hi-detailed shuttle, etc. But I think its about 4-5 months in total, but not full-time working days.

What was the most challenging part of making this?
Hmm, I love retrofuturistic style very much, and the most challenging part for me was to bring this style to the famous cartoon story of Futurama. And also I just wanted to finish this project or at least part of it. It was such a big problem for me.

The actual show open uses some 3D assets but they are flat-shaded to integrate with the show’s 2D look.

Yikes. It would be interesting to see how the characters would look when stirred through this style.
